And the award goes to…
The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers & Distributors Association (ICMAD) celebrated their annual Young Designers Competition, which took place at Twenty Four Fifth in New York City on September 21, 2011. Created in 1999, the ICMAD Young Designers Competition showcases the talents of students studying package design. The goal of the Young Designers competition is to encourage and develop future creative talent.
“Based on the work of the many talented students that participated in the ICMAD Young Designers Competition, the work is truly inspiring and I foresee many bright futures ahead,” said Pam Busiek, president & CEO, ICMAD.
The participating schools in this year’s program were The American Academy of Art, Chicago, IL; Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), Los Angeles, CA; Fashion Institute of Technology, New York, NY; and Miami International University of Art & Design, Miami, FL. Each student received a 6.5-oz. bottle, which was donated by Jack Leitman, L&S Packaging. The students were asked to create any type of facial product, such as a toner, cleanser or moisturizer. They were also asked to create the overall brand identity, including product name, descriptive copy and net weights.
As part of their winning prize package, the Young Designers met personally with Maureen Kelly, founder of tarte cosmetics; Kelly Kovak, founder of Purpose-Built; and Matthew Malin, founder of Malin + Goetz for a glimpse into how real-world cosmetics companies and design firms work.
Criteria for judging the competition included uniqueness of design, the ability to be reproduced economically plus ease of use and storage. The prestigious panel of industry professional judges for the competition included: Jennifer Welch-Barazani, creative director, Susan M. Rafaj Marketing Services; Santo Fareri, president, SRF Design, Ltd.; Gregg Lukasiewicz, president, Lukasiewicz Design, Inc.; Ken Noskin, president, Imago; and Rick Prater, president, Rick Prater Design.
The awards were presented to the students by Leslie Blodgett, creator of bareMinerals and executive chairman of Bare Escentuals. The renowned beauty expert spoke about her experiences and how beauty is what’s inside and that can change the world. It only seemed appropriate that she present these awards to the students who seek creativity and inspiration.
